Edition 2000


In 1998 the idea was born to organize in 2000 a (post-) graduate course on ‘Inclusion and Exclusion in Contemporary European Societies’. The year 2000 still seemed far away and the rapid and extensive enlargement of the European Union seemed far away as well. Only two years later, all the fuzz about 2000 is history and the enlargement process is expanding in scale and complexity and is speeding up in time. This situation, in combination with a international and multidisciplinary group of over 60 students and lecturers, hosted by the unique Inter University Center of Dubrovnik, proved to be a fruitful environment for inspiring presentations and stimulating discussions.

 

The course of 1998 was already a ‘big one’ according to IUC standards: 54 participants and resourcepersons, 13 countries, the 2000-course with almost the same title, was even bigger with 60 participant and resourcepersons from 16 countries among them even to non-European countries: the USA and Bangladesh.

 

As one of the coursedirectors said in the report Dubrovnik 2000 edition: ‘a Dubrovnik course is more than an intellectual enterprise; it is not only an affair of the ‘head’ but also of the ‘heart’…
