Challenges of a new Europe

Edition 2006

This lustrum edition of the course ‘Inclusion and Exclusion in Contemporary European Societies’ focused on the challenges of a new Europe. That was not an accidental choice, made only by the course directors, but it also was something that was sensed by the participants. Now, in 2006 and compared to the first edition in 1998, it is less about ‘overcoming the past’ and more about ‘building a future’.

The course directors really felt the urge to look more towards the future: see where we are, what we are and what we should do with each other. What challenges are there for us in this new Europe, how do we experience the diversity and dilemmas that are connected with it and what directions of development and action do we see.

A special aspect, where you cannot compare this course with the other ones, is that in discussing different challenges, dilemmas and directions, we, both participants and lecturers seemed to look constantly to find out where the hell are we in Europe and with Europe.

‘This course has been a challenge in itself, regarding how to survive it…’
